Landmark Trials

The introduction of UPLIFT® (Understanding Potential Long-term Impacts on Function with Tiotropium) reflects a key milestone for the brand. A landmark, 4-year global trial in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), UPLIFT® is evaluating the potential of tiotropium to slow disease progression by reducing the rate of decline in lung function.

UPLIFT® Overview

Duration: 4 years
Results available: 5 Oct 2008
Clinical outcome:
  • yearly rate of decline of FEV1 (trough and peak) over time in patients with COPD
  • mean yearly rate of decline of FVC (Forced Vital Capacity) and SVC (Slow Vital Capacity)
  • rate of decline in SGRQ total score (Quality of Life Index / patient perspective)
  • COPD exacerbations
  • hospitalisations due to exacerbations
  • mortality (respiratory and all-cause)

Sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and Pfizer Inc., UPLIFT® is assessing the long-term effects of tiotropium on lung-function decline, health-related quality of life, exacerbations and associated hospitalisations and mortality (respiratory and all-cause). A post-hoc analysis of data from two 1-year studies showed that patients had a rate of decline in lung function parameter through FEV1 of 12 ml/year compared with 58 ml/year for placebo, thus positively supporting the scientific rationale underlying UPLIFT®.
