This two-part study programme involving some 29,400 patients overall, will greatly broaden the knowledge gained in the landmark HOPE trial: it will assess the effects of a telmisartan-ramipril combination (ONTARGET®) and also explore the efficacy of the ARB (angiotensin II receptor blocker) Micardis® (telmisartan) in ACE-I intolerant patients (TRANSCEND™).
ONTARGET® Overview
| Duration: | 5.5 years follow up |
|---|---|
| Primary results available: | April 2008 |
| Clinical outcome: | ARB Micardis® (telmisartan) is at least as effective as the current gold standard ramipril 10mg in reducing the risk CV-related events and death in high risk CV patients. The combination of Micardis® 80mg and ramipril 10mg could provide a greater reduction in CV-related death and events than either treatment alone. |
| Potential protective areas: | - Cardiovascular mortality - Stroke - Acute myocardial infarction - Hospitalization for congestive heart failure |

"The people in ONTARGET® have all had a heart attack or stroke, coronary disease or diabetes or some complications, or are at high risk of developing these. These are patients who need multiple approaches to prevent cardiovascular disease. Think of it like climbing a staircase: every step matters. One step alone won't do. If telmisartan added to ramipril has more benefit than either drug alone - that would be the most exciting finding."
