70,000 Patients in More Than 40 Countries
In 2008, Boehringer Ingelheim will present the first results from more landmark trials in cardiovascular, respiratory and cerebrovascular diseases than any other pharmaceutical company. These landmark trials are running in more than 40 countries and involve more than 70,000 patients.
About landmark trials
Landmark trials are large-scale, randomised, controlled clinical trials with thousands of patients recruited from a great number of sites around the world. Results have a potential to broadly impact on clinical practice.
Landmark studies aim to
- save the lives of, and create more active lives for, patients with cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and respiratory disease, which currently claim the lives of over 20 million people each year.
- improve medical knowledge and management of heart disease, stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). By 2020, heart disease, stroke and COPD will be the three leading causes of death.
- provide optimum care and protection for a wide range of patients, including difficult-to-treat patients and diverse ethnic populations.
- keep people active, reducing hospitalisations and the burden of healthcare costs.
Boehringer Ingelheim landmark trials
2008 will be marked by the publication of some of our numerous landmark trials (phase IV).
Our current landmark studies include
- ONTARGET™/TRANSCEND® - a groundbreaking study programme exploring therapeutic options in cardiovascular protection
- PROFESS® - largest ever trial exploring therapeutic options in prevention of secondary stroke
- UPLIFT® - a four-year landmark trial involving nearly 6.000 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- RE-LY™ - a trial programme that evaluates long-term anticoagulant therapy
